4 law enforcement officers killed, 4 injured after shooting in Charlotte neighborhood

code enforcement charlotte nc

A shooting in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Monday highlights why some police departments across the United States have called on lawmakers in recent years to stop relaxing gun laws. The incident, which left four officers dead and several others wounded, happened as police attempted to arrest a man for possession of a firearm by a felon. The danger code enforcement officers face is illustrated in this sad video in West Valley City, UT. Sadly, a code enforcement officer was shot and killed for simply doing their job.

Let’s Learn About Code Enforcement in Local Government

It follows, then, that states with stronger gun laws have fewer gun deaths, the center reports. Looser gun laws also infuse tensions into scenarios like that in Charlotte, where police are trying to separate unlawful carriers from their guns. But, their end game and mission is to use emotional intelligence and compassion to find a balance working with the community while enforcing local code. While most states still require a permit, a growing number now let people carry concealed weapons without one.

Services

Interior Demolition permits for commercial work are issued through the CIRC. Interior Demolition is the demolition of interior components that do not affect rated assemblies and/or load bearing walls. Customers will need to complete a building permit application, include sub-contractors for any trade (E, M, or P) that has elements also being removed, and submit this application to the CIRC online or in person. There is NO new work, removal of structural components, or build back allowed to occur under the permits issued for interior demolition. Additional information regarding the demolition permitting process may be found here. That means funding them - so they have the resources they need to do their jobs and keep us safe.

Residential Inspections

In March 2007, two Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officers were killed while responding to a domestic dispute by someone not directly involved in the fight. Demeatrius Antonio Montgomery is serving a life sentence in the killings of officers Jeffrey Shelton and Sean Clark. One other member of the task force, which is made up of federal agents and other officers from across the region was injured.

Other Residential Services

This year has already seen 98 officers shot in the line of duty between January and March, with 10 of those officers dying, according to the Fraternal Order of Police, which tracks those statistics. Last year, the organization recorded 378 officers shot – the highest number on record. Today, 29 states no longer demand a permit, or training, to carry concealed weapons.

Plan Review

From homeowners with DIY projects to firms that may be new to working in North Carolina or Mecklenburg County, our friendly staff is here to help you move your project forward. In creating that committee, our goal is to help officers find resources, create legislation and develop much-needed training for those who need it. Code enforcement is a tough job, and it is not law enforcement. We do not carry guns, vests, or other weapons that may cause bodily harm or injury to others; our weapon is our strength and our ability to de-escalate situations. The Giffords Law Center’s Annual Gun Law Scorecard, which ranks and grades state gun laws, has found that gun violence in general and against police in particular is higher in states with looser gun laws.

Demolition, Move-Off and Move-On Permits

code enforcement charlotte nc

And it means taking additional action to combat the scourge of gun violence. Leaders in Congress need to step up so that we ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, require safe storage of guns, and pass universal background checks and a national red flag law. It is possible to finish a room in the basement or the attic if it can be done in conformance with the current NC residential codes.

Other Permits Not Requiring Plan Review

By the same token, the description, responsibilities and duties of the code enforcement officers vary dramatically by jurisdiction and municipality. Fortunately, I’m familiar with code enforcement because many non-emergency customer service 311 centers handle these calls. This reporter’s ride-along with the code compliance department in Sacramento, CA.

The last marshal shot and killed in the line of duty was in November 2018. Chase White was shot in Tucson, Arizona, by a man wanted for stalking local law enforcement officers, the agency said. In June 2016, together with my colleague Page White, we created the California Association of Code Enforcement Officers Officer Safety Committee to help code enforcement deal with traumatic issues. We conducted an extensive report and collected information and we found that many officers had been assaulted, threatened or even attacked. This type of activity can cause an officer to fear for their safety and can create issues when dealing with normal working conditions.

Two officers from the state Department of Adult Correction also were killed, said North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper. The governor was in Charlotte and was speaking to the families of the officers killed and hurt. “Today we lost some heroes who were out simply trying to keep our community safe,” Jennings said at a news conference.

The profession itself does not get as much recognition as it should for the amount of difference we make in the community. It is now more about regulating nuisances that hinder a community. As new laws emerge and new problems appear, there has to be a group that addresses these issues. The task force including U.S. marshals was trying to arrest a man for possession of a firearm by a felon.

A year earlier, state lawmakers had overridden a veto by the governor, relaxing gun laws to allow pistols to be sold without permits. Part of the resistance to the 2023 bill came from the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Association. In killing the bill, Senate Leader Phil Berger wondered if there was really a need to expand gun rights further in the Old North State. -- Police say law enforcement officers have been struck by gunfire in Charlotte, North Carolina. I decided to slow down and look carefully b/c I must have passed my name, but my name wasn’t on the Cheerleader roster.

My sophomore year I decided to try out for the Luv-A-Bulls cheer team, who had just won the National Championship the previous year. I was raised in a small town called Stanley, NC. I was 8 years old and b/c of my athletic capabilities at a young age, I assumed there was no sport I couldn’t do. My mom signed me up for cheer and I went to every practice eager to learn the material, as I was determined to make the team. I practiced so much around the house; my parents would yell, “sit down”. I went in the gym with 4 other girls and put on a show, so I thought. I left out the audition feeling really good and excited about becoming a cheerleader.

And they thanked the educator because their child is trans, and they learned so much from a non-healthcare perspective just from being on the ship and attending a CNE that the nurse didn’t have to attend. Knowing that it’s going to have a positive impact on their child’s life and their life as a family unit is what makes continuing education for nurses the most special.

Please view our advertising policy and product review methodology for more information. While most medical complaints on ships are routine, the medical team is equipped to perform life support services and stabilize anyone seriously ill. Personnel trained in medivac procedures would then generally medically disembark the patient on a stretcher at the next port of call and have the person transferred to a hospital. I used to really enjoy this podcast when Blake had his husband as a co-host on many episodes or was solo. I think having a non-nurse on the podcast provides an interesting take. It is unfortunately really boring now with no real substance or flow.

Nurse Blake The Shock Advised Tour

It’s so cute because people have pictures of me during a meet and greet as Nurse Blake, and then they go back 10 years ago and they have pictures of me with them or with their kids with Peter Pan. And my comedy doesn’t just speak to nurses or health care workers specifically. Even though my comedy comes from a point of view as a nurse, we all know someone who’s a nurse or that works in health care. We’ve all been a patient at the end of the day.

So, everyone will be super busy, and I can’t wait to see everyone’s outfits. I know the dancers are so excited and already rehearsing and working on the production. We meet every day about NurseCon at Sea, so as soon as the last one is over, we’re already preparing for the next one. I will be working on booking our 2025 cruise later this month. NurseCon is a fun annual nursing conference, which gives dedicated healthcare professionals a remarkable chance to learn.

Where did you go to nursing school, and what was the experience like for you?

If you don’t know what I’m talking about or there’s a term I say that you are unaware of I am going to break that down for you during the show to make sure everyone’s on the same page. Everyone has a good time, no matter what you do occupationally. Vacations sometimes are once in a lifetime for people, and for them to connect with friends and family or coworkers is super special. We’ve done three cruises since we launched and had groups of nursing students who graduated together 20 years ago. Now it’s their annual trip, and they’ve been on all three.

NurseCon at Sea is a spectacular nursing event that provides an incredible opportunity for nurses to combine learning and leisure. This unique cruise conference offers a perfect balance between continuing education credits (CNEs) and vacation-like exploration. Staff also must be certified in advanced life support or have certification or physician specialist training in areas such as emergency medicine, anesthesiology or critical care. That said, in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, many cruise lines have expanded their medical care facilities on ships and added new requirements for medical personnel. Royal Caribbean, for example, now requires all its doctors to have training in acute respiratory illness and has added an infection control officer who oversees the line's infection control plan on each ship.

It is important to adhere to your assigned time slot for boarding on the day of your travel. Therefore, arriving at any other time can lead to delays and may adversely impact the schedule. When you cruise with Norwegian, you're free. Our award-winning ships are designed for you to enjoy as you choose while cruising to beautiful destinations around the world. Along the way, enjoy a variety of superb restaurants with no fixed dining times, Broadway shows and thrilling waterslides – all of which will make your journey just as exciting as the places you visit. Training requirements for nurses also are quite detailed.

Your Responsibility As A Traveler

On large cruise ships carrying thousands of passengers and crew, your community may be the size of a town or even a small city. To handle any health issues that come up in this floating metropolis, cruise lines employ doctors and nurses who work out of an onboard medical center. NurseCon at Sea isn’t a nursing conference without education. So, we are accredited by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) and the California Board of Nursing. I have three DNPs that run and manage nurse candidacy education full time. We are super committed to it, and we’ll probably bring on 30 educators on our next sailing to deliver over 70 hours of CNEs.

The cruise line and CDC have mandated guidelines to guarantee safety during the nursing conference cruise. Stay connected for updates; changes to registration and rules may occur prior to departure. While medical personnel are on call 24 hours a day, most passengers visit during scheduled hours. Carnival Cruise Line's facilities, for instance, are open on embarkation day from 8 to 9 a.m.

This February 6-10, 2023, the NurseCon will embark on a 5-day journey of learning and fun to the Dominican Republic. The ship will sail for 5 days from Miami, Florida, and will include a stop at Great Stirrup Cay, Bahamas in addition to Cozumel. All content is the sole property of Nurses Uncorked, LLC. All medical staff are both certified and experienced. Minority Nurse talked with Nurse Blake about running one of the most popular nursing conferences and his plans for NurseCon at Sea 2024 in Mexico. Nurses, retired nurses, and nursing students from around the world can take advantage of the opportunity to convene at NurseCon at Sea. Unfortunately, there’s no guarantee of CNEs. Please check your local regulations first to see if the credits can be applied. Ayla Roberts is a Registered Nurse and freelance content writer based in Atlanta, Georgia.

To be clear, the onboard facility is not a hospital – it's more akin to a health center or ambulatory care unit. The professionals who work there have training in emergency medicine and the equipment to stabilize a patient even in dire circumstances. Mostly, though, what they deal with are things like sprained ankles, upset stomachs and people who have forgotten to pack medication. Nurse Becky came from me working in Houston, Texas.

I knew nurses were working so hard going through that, and I wanted to provide them with an education platform so they can get their courses for free. Once nurses attend our cruise, they can get their CNEs through that platform. And we will also be putting our courses from the cruise on that platform. If you can’t attend the event for whatever reason but are interested in those courses, you will take them and get the CNEs for free after the ship has sailed. All healthcare professionals, medical personnel, licensed/certified nurses, and nursing students are welcome to join. Likewise, even better, those aged 18 and over on the date of departure can bring along their spouses and family members.

I feel like anyone could be a nurse and learn the hard skills, like inserting an IV or inserting a Foley catheter. I think the most unique skill of a nurse is the ability to communicate and connect, and you really can’t teach that in nursing school. I feel like being a nurse has helped me do what I do to connect with other nurses and to be able to do interviews like this, which I absolutely love doing. I love traveling and meeting nurses, it’s definitely a skill that I’ve been able to bring to nursing that nursing has helped me with overtime. Another fun fact, I actually worked at Disney’s Magic Kingdom as Peter Pan.

St Kitts Cruise Port Guide 9 Best Things To Do In St Kitts Port

Even the country’s museum is located in the port amidst the shopping malls. The archway through the museum ushers you into the downtown area for further explorations. I am the creator of an e-book “Mediterranean Cruise Port Guide“, the most comprehensive guide to 45 Mediterranean cruise ports, & YouTube channel @AdventourBegins. Timothy Hill Viewpoint is located only a minute drive from the St Kitts cruise terminal and what you’ll see there is absolutely breathtaking!

A ride from Port Zante to the departure point of the railway takes only 10 minutes. This tour is not wheelchair accessible, as the buses and train don’t have a lift and there are steps to be managed. Also, buses cannot take wheelchairs and scooters as they are small/mid-sized. Do not miss this unique sightseeing tour on the “Last Railway in the West Indies”, the only and last operational railway in the Caribbean! Enjoy the Caribbean countryside and learn all about the history of St. Kitts on a 30-mile circle route by train and a small sightseeing bus. Watch out for the cars here and be careful when posing for a photo, because the area is packed with cars, taxis, street vendors, and tourists.

Adventure and Outdoor Activities

The best practice is knowing what amount you want to pay and keep asking people for that price to your destination until someone agrees. Generally, they will originally offer $10 higher than they are willing to accept. The tour includes rum punch, and a ride throughout the island of St Kitts.

Experience history at Romney Manor

Dining in St. Kitts, whether at a high-end restaurant, a local eatery, or a street food stall, provides a delightful culinary journey through the flavors of the Caribbean. If you takeaway one thing from this St Kitts cruise port guide, it should be to not underestimate the island. There isn’t an official taxi stand in St Kitts (at least from my experience). From the moment you walk off the ship, taxi drivers will be approaching you, which is a bit overwhelming.

From the top, you can get amazing panoramic views of the neighboring islands including Saba, Statia, St Barths, and Nevis. Fort George Citadel is one of the areas you can explore and here you can visit Fort George Museum displaying exhibits and interesting historic artifacts. You will hear stories of the soldiers, slaves, and local people, and watch a short video about the fort’s history in an air-conditioned room. You’ll ride for approximately 30 km/18 miles on double-decker railcars allowing you to enjoy breathtaking views from the top.

Both excursion-minded day-trippers from cruise ships and longer-term visitors will see all sorts of offers for waterborne adventures. Some tours include a stop at a beach on nearby Nevis; other excursions are timed to catch the sunset, and some feature a beach barbecue. Port Zante is located within a short walk from the historic center of the city and the port itself is developed and offers a wide variety of facilities. Besides the fortress, the island’s other unique attraction is its former sugarcane railroad, now repurposed for sightseeing.

You will also find a tourist information center, restrooms, tour booths, and a taxi rank. The shore excursion meeting place is usually in the Arrivals Hall located at the terminal entrance (always double-check the tour ticket, though).

Learn the history behind the structures in the estate and enjoy picturesque views of the lush backdrop. The treasures of its thick green trees are amazing, explore its flora and fauna, some of which are used by locals to cure diseases. You can book this excursion through your cruise or local tour operators like David of Poinciana travels. Cruisers who have taken this excursion with him, rave about his customer service and knowledge of the destination. Some interesting attractions include the “Circus” clock tower and independence square. The monument at the center of the circus resembles London’s Piccadilly circus and bears a clock tower with a water fountain.

This communal spirit is evident in the warm welcome extended to visitors, who are often treated like long-lost friends by the friendly locals. The local dialect incorporates elements of African languages, British English, and Creole expressions, creating a linguistic tapestry as rich and varied as the culture itself. Art galleries and craft markets provide a showcase for these talents, offering visitors a glimpse into the creative soul of St. Kitts. These musical styles provide the soundtrack to daily life and special celebrations, with live performances a common and cherished part of many gatherings. Music and dance are integral to Kittitian culture, with roots in African traditions and influences from the island’s colonial past.

It includes snorkel equipment, an open bar, a light lunch, and stops at some of the best snorkeling locations. When I visited Basseterre St Kitts on my Southern Caribbean cruise, I honestly had low expectations. It was less known to me, and I wasn’t sure what to do during our visit.

Officially named the Federation of St. Christopher (St. Kitts) and Nevis, St Kitts and Nevis is a small country formed by two islands in the Leeward Islands chain of the West Indies. Basseterre, the capital city of St Kitts, was founded in the 17th century and is one of the oldest seaports in the Eastern Caribbean. Dating to the 17th century, the manor house and bell tower were the hubs of a large estate that grew rich off the forced labor of hundreds of enslaved people.

Allow at least one hour to walk through the rooms and explore the fortress. Bars popular with visitors bookend the sand, but along the middle portion you’ll find casual cafes and stalls where people unwind after work, on their days off and always on Sundays. Look for locally caught seafood like grouper served simply right off the grill.

St. Kitts is full of rich and diverse history about its colonialism. Engage and mingle with a few for some deep learning of the Caribbean cruise island. The reward is a beautiful volcanic mountaintop and its accompanying vistas at the end of the hike. The great thing about this rainforest is that it has a twist, it doesn’t rain all the time, thus giving it a more approachable manner. Just a short distance from the port, you will access this highly recommended attraction in St. Kitts. Brimstone Hill Fortress was built in the 17th century and lies a top of an 800-foot hill that overlooks the Caribbean Sea.

If you have more time than a day in St Kitts or aren’t feeling a beach day. The following three activities are a great way to spend your day. We also stopped at a few viewpoints on the way to the beach to capture photos of the fantastic views.

Besides the sweeping views across the sea, the summit vantage point lets you peer down into the deep crater, which has a seasonal lake and active fumaroles. The Atlantic-facing beach on the isthmus southeast of Basseterre gets pounded by waves from the open ocean for much of the year. The breakers can offer thrilling swimming, although they also demand respect and caution. Offshore reefs moderate the action slightly, but still, this is the beach to come to for pounding surf. Opened in 1926, the railway once fully circled the main part of the island and allowed intensive sugarcane production to continue until the last crop in 2005. St Kitts is home to one of the best stone fortresses in the western hemisphere.

Cruise ships dock at Port Zante in Basseterre, the capital city located on the southwest coast of the island. Due to its deep water harbor, Port Basseterre has two berths that can accommodate both large cruise vessels and cargo ships. For any cruises listed, Cruise Critic does not guarantee any specific rates or prices. Imagine invaders sailing your way as you revel in the views out to sea. Exhibits detail the harsh lives of soldiers stationed here, and the even harsher lives of the enslaved people forced to construct the 2m-thick (7ft) walls.

The Best Time to Cruise Alaska 2024: A Month-by-Month Guide

That makes having your own balcony a prime piece of real estate, especially near Denali National Park, portions of the Inside Passage or Tracy Arm Fjord. Holland America and Princess are the biggest mainstream lines for an Alaska cruise. But you'll also see Alaska itineraries from Carnival, Disney, Norwegian (NCL) and Royal Caribbean, which gives you an array of price points to consider. An Alaska cruise costs anywhere from $500 to $8,000 or more during high season. Cheaper fares can be usually found on mainstream lines like Royal Caribbean and NCL, while Cunard, Disney and Seabourn will be more expensive.

The 6 Best Cruises for Northern Lights Viewing - AFAR Media

The 6 Best Cruises for Northern Lights Viewing.

Posted: Fri, 05 Apr 2024 07:00:00 GMT [source]

Below, we have outlined why summer is the best time of the year for an Alaska cruise. That said, the routing of cruise ships away from shore and the light pollution of major cities affords some of the best conditions for northern lights spotting. According to McDaniel, some ships are even starting to extend the Alaska cruise season, sailing as early as April. Those summer months, however, are when you're likely to see the warmest weather, with temperatures around 50 to 70 degrees, as well as the longest number of daylight hours, she said.

Read more on when to cruise to Alaska:

Just as in April and May, you’ll likely have the water to yourself, and even fewer people in the ports you call upon. Along with cooler weather, you’ll also find lower fares that will please your bank account. Fall is also mating season for wildlife, so expect to see some friskiness. When traveling from Vancouver in the Inside Passage of Southeast Alaska, the waters are mostly protected and provide smooth sailing. If ports include Anchorage, Seward, or Whittier, cruise ships must cross the Gulf of Alaska, which has notoriously rougher waters.

Nesting Eagles

Add high-powered binoculars to your Alaska packing list to ensure that you get to see all of the wildlife possible. Juneau gets about 17 days of rain in August, so a high-quality raincoat is essential. After the Summer Solstice in June, Alaska begins losing daylight with each passing day. While the days are still longer than those in the Lower 48, they are getting slightly shorter throughout July.

You won’t want to miss this indescribable sight, so watch for clear night skies and set an alarm to go on deck (or on your balcony) for potential middle-of-the-night Northern Lights shows. In September, the scale now tips towards later sunrises and earlier sunsets in Alaska. By the end of September, there are less than 12 hours of daylight in Juneau. Precipitation increases to 19 days of the month, so pack a raincoat with a hood (you’ll be grateful to have it!). Not only is it your best shot for warmer weather, but you’re also sure to see a good amount of the wildlife Alaska is famous for. The loss of daylight does mean you could see the Aurora Borealis while cruising to Alaska in late August.

When is the best time to explore Alaska’s cities and towns?

Definitely pack for rain; consider skipping the umbrella and instead bringing a wide-brimmed waterproof hat, rain jacket, rain pants and waterproof shoes or boots. Top scenic cruising destinations in Alaska include Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, Hubbard Glacier, Tracy Arm (Twin Sawyer Glaciers), Dawes Glacier at Endicott Arm and College Fjord. Ketchikan is where folks go to see the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show, with athletes wielding axes and saws in traditional lumbering activities. Look to UnCruise Adventures, Alaskan Dream Cruises, Hurtigruten and Lindblad Expeditions for the best adventure cruises.

What shore excursions are available in Alaska throughout the cruise season?

best time for an alaska cruise

On clear nights, you could have a chance to spot the northern lights — though they won't shine as brightly as they do in winter. Rather than stay up all night, see if your ship or pre- or post-cruise hotel has a sign-up sheet for people who want a wake-up call should the lights appear. Cruising in September will give you the highest chance of viewing the Aurora Borealis on an Alaskan cruise.

When is the best time to cruise to Alaska for maximum daylight?

Cruise week report: Couple left behind by cruise ship, cruising essentials you need, the best time to cruise to Alaska ....

Perhaps the best reason to cruise in September is a chance to see the northern lights. Nights are dark again, and while your chance of seeing them in Southeast Alaska is low, taking a land tour package along with your September cruise gets you farther north into Aurora Borealis country. If spotting wildlife is a priority for you on an Alaska cruise, pick your sailing date carefully. June, July, and August are fantastic times to cruise Alaska to view wildlife, as these months bring the highest chances of spotting whales, bears, and salmon. The best time to take an Alaska cruise is in the summer when beauty and adventure instill a newfound sense of wonder into the Great Land. Lush green landscapes are sprinkled with delicate, magenta flowers while the horizon dons frosted alps and royal blue skies.

If you prefer to stay grounded, you can find informative trolley tours of ports like Skagway. Active travelers can explore Alaska by sea kayak or canoe, hike on glaciers and through rainforests, zip line, bike, ride an ATV and even snorkel (you'll need a dry suit). If you want to cruise Alaska but also see some of the interior and enjoy a stay in a lodge or hotel, go for a cruisetour package from either Holland America or Princess Cruises. Both have fantastic itineraries that take passengers not only to the Inside Passage, but also to Anchorage, Denali National Park, the Yukon, Kenai Peninsula, Talkeetna and Fairbanks.

Embarking and disembarking in Seattle or Vancouver can make air travel easier and cheaper than one-way Alaska cruises, which require flights to smaller, more expensive airports in Alaska. An Alaska Inside Passage cruise typically lasts seven nights, embarking and returning to Seattle or Vancouver. Luxury cruises to Alaska on smaller ships can be a great option for those looking to pair remote wilderness with a bit of pampering. Your best high-end bets are Oceania, Regent Seven Seas, Seabourn, Silversea and Windstar. September offers the best possibility for cruisers to catch the Northern Lights in Alaska.

It’s not uncommon for the weather to be nice enough for t-shirts in the summer as opposed to the raincoats and down jackets you may have to wear in early spring or fall. You'll likely encounter the highest chance of rain if you take an Alaska cruise in August, but it's also when you can expect to find the most comfortable outdoor temperatures. The weather in Alaska can, and will, change multiple times per day, but you will find the warmest months to be June, July and August. There are definite ebbs and flows to demand and crowds in the ports you will visit depending on which month you sail. There are advantages of cruising in each of the summer months, including when prices will be higher or lower. It is hard to top the majestic beauty of rugged glaciers, plethora of unique animal sightings, or huge mountains.

They are generally visible across the state, so any itinerary will likely do, though you'll have the best show in less populated areas like Denali National Park. You'd also do well to look at the moon cycles, as a full moon can drown out the Aurora Borealis. At AAA, we offer a wide selection of cruise itineraries to those explorers who want to get up close and personal with Alaskan wildlife, landscape, and culture. To maximize your chance of witnessing the northern lights, get off the boat and join a land excursion to Fairbanks.
